January 11, 2010i have a 07 JK 4 door. it has 35/12.50R17 and a 4 inch Skyjacker lift. a few months ago i noticed that between 30 and 40 MPH the front tires start to wobble along with the steering wheel, enough to stop completely. ive balanced and rotated the tires, replaced trac bars, replaced shock stabilizer, tightened all nuts and bolts up front. can ya`ll help me ?
January 11, 2010Did you check the alignment? that`s one of the few things that can cause death wobble right off the bat.
January 11, 2010Check the trac bar for wear at the bushing or even loose, any play is bad. Also I seperated belt in a steel belted radial can cause this. A tire with a seperated belt can be in balance. Do you have another set of tires you could try?
January 11, 2010no i sure don`t. do i have to dismount the tire to find out ?
January 11, 2010How about alignment? Especially the caster.
January 12, 2010JK stands for "just kidding" right? JK! Faulty steering stabilizer, hydro leak, bushings... that`s my experience.
January 12, 2010I`m not sure if you can see a belt problem once the tire is dismounted or not. A friend of mine had the wobble and did the same things you did, but Discount Tire found the problem. With new tires, wobble went away.
January 12, 2010Who`s trac bar are you running? Stock? Skyjacker? Death wobble usually comes from trac bar issues or control arms.
And stop with the JK smak. Quit flaming.
January 12, 2010yeah, check the track bar to see if the holes on the mounts are distorted or egg shaped. you should take the track bar off and physically check the mounts as sometimes it can seem tight
Side note: Jason, what size lift and tires are you running on your 4 dr JK? the wife is getting one soon and wants to have a lift and bigger tires
January 12, 2010To check the tire slowly rotate it look for tread to be more split then the rest or a bump sticking up. This will shake the steering wheel out of your hands.
