December 27, 2008hey everyone im thinking of doin a axle swap in my xj ive come into a pair of 44s out of a grand waggy and want to put them in my xj. but i got a few questions. 1). can u weld the upper control arm bracket on the drivers side to the cast iron housing and have it be strong. 2). are the axles waay shorter *or* longer than a 30/35. its not a high pinion 44 in the front so i kno i need a new driveshaft. and i kno i got to weld to the axle tube which don''t bother me. its welding to the housing and the width issue thats got me a little spooked on doin this swap. any advice would be much helpful thanx.

December 27, 2008i would make sure a magnet sticks to the rear axle casting before i did anything.....think some were aluminum
December 27, 2008the 44s im looking for are out of a mid to late 80s jeep wagoneer so i don''t believe there would b a alum one
December 28, 2008build a truss and you wont have to weld to the housing. but i wouldnt bother with the swap in the front....the dana 30 shares the same weak point with the dana 44.....the axle shaft u joints. so all you gain is weight and less clearance and a lower pinion......and just a little inner axle and ring gear strength.
id look into an 8.8 in the rear and good shafts and u joints in the front
