June 25, 2008Eric, I looked at your pictures and didn''t see how you attached the top of the coilovers. Did you build hoops? They didn''t appear to be straight up and down.

June 25, 2008My coil overs ARE straight up and down (*or* perpendicular to the ground) as this is the best possible position for them. The way I mounted mine was to drill a large hole in the fender well and let the coilover stick up into the passenger compartment. The I ran some DOM from the rollbar hoop behind the seats to the rollbar in the back corners. Welded some tabs onto this tube and mounted the coil over to it.
There are some good shots under the misc folder in my buildup page.
June 27, 2008Steve, Pirate4x4 had some pretty good threads about the geometry when doing a 4link. I was doing a lot of research on it several months ago. I don''t have my work computer with me right now, which is where I saved all the links, so I can''t link you anything without searching through all those threads again and I don''t have time for it right now. Also on poison spyders site they had some references on it as well. I do know that it looks like a pain in the arse. I''m wanting to do the same thing to mine but I don''t know... Gonna be an expensive endeavor if I do dive off into it. Good luck, hope this might help. If you haven''t found what all you''re looking for in the next 2 weeks *or* so, send me an email. I should have my work computer back by then with all the links in it I was reading up on.
June 30, 2008OK. I looked at some rigs this weekend with custom 4 links. Using TJ front coils and fabing thier own links. I am thinking this is possible, *or* I could extend the frame, find some XJ leafs, go spring over and use boomarang shackles. Don''t know which way to go.
June 30, 2008Definatley go with the link set up. The XJ springs bend way too easy. I am on my fourth set and they are a hybrid mix. If you do go with them, make sure and use two main leafs in the set up. That appears to be the best so far.
I to took notes this past weekend on a rig similar to mine except it had a linked rear. He was running late 70''s station wagon coil springs in the rear with limit straps. The set up worked awsome for less than $400. Being my budget what it is, that is the route I am going to go. Can always upgrade to coil overs later if need be.
June 30, 2008Tj front springs with out the weight of the eng. wouldn''t that be stiff I have some skyjacker 8"rear springs if you wont them and soon will have 6" front springs
June 30, 2008Yes I want them. Thanks Seth
June 30, 2008the fronts are perfect for the rear of a jeep from what ive seen, some say there too soft
as for xj''s yeah they bend..... you see mine......just because their bent doesnt mean they wont work. 10 bucks each at the pick and pull thats how i see it
how do you link the rear for 400 bucks????? when did wal mart start selling that stuff? haha.
i priced it for mine...... for the brackets/tube/misc. and 1.25" heims (get the good stuff and do it one time overkill!!) it was around 1000 bucks before springs.
thats about 100 xj springs at the belton pick and pull if you do the math
June 30, 2008Well let''''s see, new coil springs from Autozone $75, 4 pcs of DOM (12'') $105, 8 joints for DOM $250 Use scrap steel in shop to build brackets $0 Whoops, better add another $50 for limit straps = $450 Tim, all you need to do is know someone who could weld and you will be set Going to the pull a part every week and replacing springs really gets old...when you are old ...like me
July 1, 2008hey, I know someone who can weld! I was thinking about going to Temple steels scrap pile and finding what i don''t have for the spring buckets and using Seths springs. I was looking at ordering the brakets and ends from GenRite. *or* I can do like Timmy said. ?????
July 1, 2008just what kind of tube you plan on using there???? and where do you get it so cheap if it happens to be the correct stuff?
July 1, 2008Thats not cheap....its about right on....(unless its thick walled)
4 peices of 16 inch is about 6 feet, right? Last I checked DOM was $11 per foot for 2.25" 3/16" wall.
Might be too light wieght for the lowers, but works for the uppers.
Although 16" seems REALLY short. Are those control arms?
I think mine ended up at like 30" each
