December 17, 2007i have a similar question, i have a 95yj with a 4cl. can i put anybigger than 31" tires on it without messing it up
December 17, 2007Agree. On a stock 5, even a 31 may be tight. Here's why. It's a little thing called leaf spring sag. Basically, the leafs give up a bit over the years. Chances are, if you install new factory spec leafs, the CJ will sit higher than now. My YJ went up over 6 inches with a 4 inch lift due to the amount of spring sag I had.
December 17, 2007rocky95 - always glad to welcome someone new to the site. especialy when they have a yj
December 17, 2007Rocky, my 94 YJ rubbed BAD with 31's on a 8 inch wheel. Even with the little 1 inch body lift. You'll probably be better off with 29s or 30s. However with a 3 inch lift and a 1 inch body lift 31's are great. However, the 4 banger will be straining with the 31 inchers. It just kills the gear ratio. It'll still wheel fine, but highways and leaving stoplights will surely suck.
December 18, 2007so 31s will fit a stock 67 cj5 without rubbing how would that be on the motor will it boog it down(the motor is a v6 orgnial) i am just worried that the 31s will wear out the motor faster so my question is what size tire can i put that will not boog down the motor and right not regearing is out of the question so anyhelp would be great
December 18, 2007Stick with a nice 29" tire. Good option for dual purpose. Plus, you can do some decent wheelin' with 29's. Get a locker and a good pliable suspension and you'd be amazed.
December 18, 2007thanks now where would i find a 29 i have only seen 30s and up
December 19, 2007Just curious classicCJ, have you ever heard of Google?
December 19, 2007Hey classic, if you don't want to lift it, I'd go with 30's or 31's. A cheap way to go with a lift is just a shackle lift. You won't gain much, but it may help with the tires. The only other concern would be your speedometer..........oh wait, nevermind, you said it don't have one.
