August 6, 2007Well as all of you probably know, I purchased a 4:1 Tera Low for the XJ. Got it a few weeks ago and since we are going to the NCC G2G this weekend, I thought I would install it this past Sat. Figured about a 4hour install.....Guessed wrong, real wrong . After realizing I would have to remove Tcase and engine/tranny skid, then I had to remove the T/case mount to get to the bottom bolt, then had to remove the darn exhaust to get to the bolts on the passenger side. Once all that was complete, out came the Tcase. The 4:1 swap want as usual, just had to battle the C clips a little. So 5 1/2hrs later it was ready to go back in. Crawl under the Jeep and lift the Tcase up to install and it will not go Thinking I just did not have it lined up, I try again no luck so one more time...still won't go no I am Acted like the splines would not line up. Are there different spline cuts?? That's it for the night!
Sunday I go and measure the output shaft and input shaft. Should fit I thought. gave up on the XJ and replaced the shackles on the YJ and went for a ride (stress relief)> Call Tera this morning and they said, after checking a few things that the spline are all the same and it should go on. So I get home this evening and TRY AGAIN! same thing, now I am really and hot because it is 98 degrees out and feel like 110 in the garage. Now after more investigation I figure out that the studs are not lining up, one of the holes are off ...what the H***. I call Tera back and ask them what the chances are of getting a 4:1 that is clocked wrong? He says "OHHH YEAA" we did have a few(25 to be exact) that were recieved clocked wrong, thought we had all of them accounted for. NOT! Now I have to go out and take it all back apart and box up to send back. I expressed my displeasure with this scenario and let them know of our state meet this weekend. They "say" they are going to express ship me one out and I will have on Thurs...We will see although I am not counting on it.
Lesson learned..upon removing old T/case, test fit new part before beginning installation. Oh and I am realy good at disassembling a np231.
Here is the T/case as of this evening
We will have to wait and see it it makes it to the trail on sat.
