May 31, 2005Bringing this one back, I finally kind of looked at this.
I found that I do have a tranny cooler. The fluid runs into the cooler then to the radiator and then back to the tranny.
I still need to add the wetter than water and change the coolant mix.
The temo runs ok when not towing and ac on.
June 1, 2005Have you tried not towing, but driving without overdrive? You mentioned a few posts ago that it ran hot while wheelin. I'll assume you weren't towing at the time. You said that when you tow, you don't use over drive and I'm just curious to know if it could be related to that and not just that the truck is pulling a load. Will be interesting to see what the Water Wetter does.
If at first you don`t secede try, try again!
June 16, 2005Yep bringing this one back up.
It seems that it is the Fan Clutch but not 100% sure.
I bought the Fan Clutch but have not put it on.
While on Vacation and loaded down with the kids, Camping stuff, Tools and all our stuff I found that my temp was getting hot again in Overdrive, not towing.
I spoke with the guy at the auto parts store and we were looking at it before I left and he noticed that the fan was not gaining any speed when the engine speed was increased and the engine was already at running temp. He told me that the fan speed should increase as it revs and it did not. They also said another way to check it was when you turn off the engine if the fan spins a couple extra turns after the engine stops the fan clutch is not working properly, well this is not the case for me.
So I bought it, Fan Clutch, but it is still in the parts box.
On the way back from SO CA I ran at a constant 235 degree's in the 100 degree temp at 80 MPH with AC on, when I came back over to the coast side valley where it was cooler I finally temped down to reality and maybe 210 degree's.
Anyone want to come over and put this thing on???
I have a new water pump to so I was thinking of putting it on to.
June 16, 2005Sounds to me like your master mechanic and you will be havin a fun weekend... Glad to finally see you two kids back in action!!
June 16, 2005All Right Chris...Now you have another opportunity to use that new 5000 pc tool kit

June 17, 2005My xj had a bad prob w running hot as do most xj's idk about grands but i replaced my radiator w an HD model you might want to look into a new radiator it might jus b a couple of ur inlets are pluged and it can handle that regular but when it needs those when the engine is runin hoter pulling it jus doesnt have the capacity to handle it
June 22, 2005FIXED
Well we tried to do the clutch fan ourselves but we broke the spanner wrench trying so I decided to take it to my mech and have a new water pump ( I already had it as a spare), Fan clutch and belt put on.
OH my can I tell the difference in the way it sounds under the hood and the temp now.
The fan does make a Whirling sound when at temp now and it blows a lot of air as you rev it up at temp. What a difference.
Besides I have not had my ZJ to the mech in a few months now I think he was missing it.
Funny thing is he notices all the changes I make to it and comments.
